On Monday, at the 74th Television Academy Awards, Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae became the first Asian actor to win Outstanding Actor In A Drama Series for his act in Netflix's global hit Squid Game.

The event took place on September 12, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Squid Game is a South Korean series about a bunch of people who fail at life for various reasons, but suddenly receive a mysterious invitation to participate in a survival game to win more than 38 million US dollars. The game takes place at an isolated island and the participants are locked up until there is a final winner.

The director of the show, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has been awarded the Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

As reported by ABC News, it was a full show at the red carpet this year with the entire ceremony taking place indoors like it used to and in front of a full studio audience at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Interestingly, it is also the first major Emmys is being broadcasted live since Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards.

Host Kenan Thompson, who is also marking his debut as emcee of the Emmys, joked in his opening monologue about how Zendaya cannot date Leonardo DiCaprio as she recently turned 26, and took multiple digs at streaming giant Netflix for losing subscribers.

“This should be a night of appreciating artistry and creativity and removing the stress of it all out,” he was quoted as saying by The Associated Press.

Lionsgate Play is exclusively streaming the 74th Emmy Awards in India.
