Sayani Gupta, Tushar Pandey, and Hussain Dalal’s Homecoming, which is currently streaming on SonyLiv, will be screened at the fifth London Bengali Film Festival. Directed by Soumyajit Majumder, the film was released in February on the OTT platform. The film was conceived in 2019 at the Producer’s Lab of NFDC Film Bazaar.
Talking about the selection, Soumyajit said, “The film has been loved by the global audience – especially the Bengali diaspora. I am glad that the film will be screened in London. I hope it goes to other festivals too. Many festivals do not accept films that are released, especially on the digital platform. We will try to push the film to the festivals that accept such entries.”
#Homecoming is a story of a reunion. A dismantled youth theatre group reunites for a party on a Nabami night during Durga Puja. As the night unfolds, the past of the group gets revealed. The stories of heartbreaks, broken promises and other secrets come out. “The film is about a life that I lived in Kolkata. Youth theatre used to be a widely popular phenomenon in the city. Since my high school days, I have worked in such groups. I saw success stories. I got selected for films, including a film by Qaushiq Mukherjee. I got selected for theatre workshops. I saw Radhika Apte up close and personal because of such collaboration. I was attending a workshop and she was an eminent theatre artiste then. It was before she became a busy Bollywood actress. And then everything just evaporated. The groups got dismantled and nobody bothered. This bothered me for a long time. That’s how I started penning the script,” the director told us.
