The movie is set to go on floors in Attappadi by October 10
While several movies based on the tribal youth Madhu, who was beaten to death by a mob in 2018 after being accused of theft, was rumoured to be in the works, filmmaker Vijeesh Mani’s movie title Aadhivaasi will be the first to go on floors.
The director, who had previously helmed Jayaram’s Namo and Mmmm, confirms to OTTplay that Sarath Appani will be playing the role of Madhu in the movie, which is scheduled to begin shooting in Attappadi by October 10.
On choosing the incident to make a film, the filmmaker says, “I wanted to plan a film that could be universally relatable. This movie is based on Madhu’s hunger. It’s something that exists everywhere – be it the US or Africa. Also, through Aadhivaasi, we are also discussing the discrimination based on colour and race. This again is prevalent all over the world as is evident from the #BlackLivesMatter protests after George Floyd’s death in the US. We will also be touching upon the environmental impacts due to our actions.”
While Vijeesh has scripted the film, its dialogues are by Thangaraj M, who is from Madhu’s community in Attappadi. The movie will be in Madhu's language - Muduga. Talking about the movie’s tagline – The Black Death, the director says, “Madhu’s death is something that moved all of us and it’s still painful to recollect.” Apart from Sarath, most of the other cast members are debutants from Attappadi.
Sarath, who was last seen in Fahadh Faasil’s Malik, turned director for a webseries titled Monica, which is streaming on YouTube.
