Hey there, yet another brand new show List hai to hit hai, this is your host and dost Nikhil with you.

Although there seems to be no theme filmmakers have left unexplored while searching for good stories, some ideas are a bit harder to conceptualise than others. Adapting video games is one among them. It can be a daunting task to come up with a full-length feature film from the huge universe of video games. However, there are instances where filmmakers have taken up the challenge nonetheless, giving birth to many video game-based movies. While some hit the mark, others miss it by a mile. But all of them are thoroughly enjoyable.

In today's podcast, we look into a listicle of movies inspired by some of the most popular video game franchises in the world

Mortal Kombat

Based on the popular fighting game franchise, Mortal Kombat tells the story of an unlikely group of people assembled together to participate in the eponymous Mortal Kombat, a martial arts tournament whose results decide the fate of the Earth. The film incorporates several elements from the game in its plot, making it a fan favourite. The film also features incredibly well-performed action sequences, stunning visuals and set design. The film was also a commercial success.

The film, rated 5.6 by OTTplay, can be watched exclusively on Google Play movies and Disney+ Hotstar.

The Angry Birds Movie

The popular Angry Birds mobile game filled players with joy as they shot the grumpy little birds into towers and earned points. In 2016, these adorable creatures got a movie of their own, that tells the story of a short tempered bird, Red. His anger issues make him an outcast among the people of his island. But when some shady pigs spell trouble for the islanders, Red is forced to work with them to save his home. The colourful movie is definitely a visual treat, whether the viewer is familiar with the game it is based on or not.

We at OTTplay have rated it a 6.5 and it streams on numerous OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube.

Sonic the Hedgehog

The Sonic franchise is one of the oldest game franchises and the oldest on this list. The live-action movie based on Sega’s biggest IP was initially met with uproar when the teaser was dropped. The filmmakers apologised and reworked the design and visuals, and upon release, the fans of this timeless classic welcomed it with open arms. The film features a stellar cast of Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, and Jim Carrey.

We’ve given this movie a 6.9 rating, and you can catch it exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

Resident Evil

Based on the Japanese survival horror video game series of the same name, Resident Evil follows the story of a young woman named Alice, who is afflicted with amnesia, and finds herself in the midst of a deadly viral outbreak that turns its hosts into killer zombies. The film spawned numerous sequels, and while it has received less than stellar reviews, the film franchise went on to become the highest-grossing series based on video games. Rife with action, gore and a fast-paced story, it is definitely a must watch for video game lovers.

We, at OTTplay, have rated the movie a 6.9. Watch this on ZEE5 and YouTube movies.

Rampage

A big sci-fi action movie starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson about fighting giant monsters is something that screams ‘popcorn’ flick, where there is not much you can complain about. This monster movie based on a three decade old game franchise is an unapologetic action thriller, with some of the best graphical rendering of giant monsters ever seen on the silver screen.

We, at OTTplay, have rated it 6.5 and you could catch the movie on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube movies.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

Pokemon has become a prominent pop-culture symbol across the globe. This popular animated TV show from the late 90s and early 2000s was originally a video game released by Nintendo for the very first Gameboy. The first live-action Pokemon movie, Detective Pikachu, was a pleasant surprise for fans. Ryan Reynolds lending his voice to Pikachu was a change nobody anticipated, but turned out to be a masterstroke.

We at OTTPlay have rated it 7. Catch this blockbuster on YouTube movies and Google Play movies.

Assassin's Creed

Based on one of the highest selling video game franchises in the world, Assassin’s Creed is a sci-fi action film which follows a man who learns he is the descendant of a brotherhood of assassins. He is recruited by a group called Templars, who seek his help in finding a coveted possession with the potential to end humanity’s struggles, and with it free will. The movie stays true to several aspects of the popular game. Its visuals and set design also received much praise for recreating the authentic world of the video game.

OTTplay has rated it a 6, and you can catch this film on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

The Witcher

Originally based on a relatively obscure yet excellent series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, it became the biggest name in the gaming industry after CD Project Red released Witcher III: Wild Hunt. The game went on to shatter sales records and the record for most awards won by a video game until Naughty Dogs’ The Last of Us Part II nabbed the spot last year. The popularity of the game led to Netflix ordering a live-action TV show with Superman himself, Henry Cavil, as the titular character. The show was a massive hit upon release and has been renewed for a second season.

This movie has a whopping rating of 8 by OTTplay and is available exclusively on Netflix.
