Spoilers ahead:

Towards the end of episode 5 of the DisneyPlus Hotstar Premium show WandaVision, Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) hears her doorbell ring. It’s already a fraught moment – she and husband Vision (Paul Bettany) have been arguing over how their picture-perfect suburban life in Westview masks a much darker reality. Viewers already know that Wanda resurrected Vision from the dead, but now he accuses also her of creating a sitcom-like universe for the two of them to live in and forcing other helpless people to play along under duress. Wanda, however, claims she doesn’t fully understand how they ended up in Westview either and denies controlling its residents. Things reach a boiling point. Then her twin brother shows up.

That’s right, the MCU Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) was killed in the battle of Sokovia in Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015), sacrificing his life to save Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). But it’s not this Pietro who shows up, it’s the Pietro played by Evan Peters in Fox’s rebooted X-Men franchise. Dr. Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) then says what everyone’s thinking: They recast Pietro?

There are some notable differences between the two Pietros. While the MCU one got his speedster powers from the Mind Stone, the X-Men one is a mutant, which so far haven’t appeared in the MCU. While Wanda’s been grieving her twin after his death, the Pietro at her doorstep never had a twin.

In one word, multiverses. For years, MCU characters and Fox’s X-Men were unable to share a movie universe for legal reasons, despite hanging out in the comics. The recent Disney-Fox merger opens the door to mutants joining the MCU, which might be what Pietro’s arrival suggests. There are also reports of the third MCU Spiderman film featuring two past Spidermen (Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield from the Fox movies) alongside new Spiderman Tom Holland, lending support to the multiverse theory. That the events of WandaVision lead to Doctor Strange And The Multiverse of Madness suggest a timeline in which Wanda’s manipulation of reality causes a rift in the multiverse, causing Doctor Strange to step in and fix it.

Maybe. Wanda’s said that she isn’t in control of Westview, which means it isn’t her subconscious manifesting Pietro at her doorstep. Is someone else manipulating her? Have that entity’s powers pulled a Pietro from a completely different universe into Westview? Or is it all an illusion designed to trick Wanda? Will Evan Peters continue to appear in the show or is it just a cameo? With four episodes of the show left, only time will tell.
