More than the film itself, the suspense surrounding the release of filmmaker SS Rajamouli's historical magnum opus RRR is keeping audiences on the tenterhooks. RRR, starring Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn in key roles, had wrapped its shoot recently in Georgia and few locations at Hyderabad. While the film, whose post-production work is nearly complete, was postponed from its earlier announced release date October 13, 2021, recently, it was expected to hit theatres in either March/summer 2022. Reports now hint that the film may release for the Sankranti season in 2022, on January 12.

If proven true, RRR's Sankranti release may upset the plans of many producers in the coming days. In Telugu itself, three biggies have confirmed their release plans for Sankranti 2022, namely Mahesh Babu's Sarkaaru Vaari Paata, Pawan Kalyan-Rana Daggubati starrer Bheemla Nayak and Prabhas, Pooja Hegde's pan-Indian film Radhe Shyam. Meanwhile, in Tamil, Ajith-starrer Valimai and Vijay's action potboiler Beast are due for a release during the same weekend. Akshay Kumar's historical Prithviraj too is to arrive in theatres on January 21, 2022 (a week after Sankranti).

The markets across the world are gradually opening up and RRR, budgeted at nearly Rs 350-400 crore, has faced multiple postponements already. There's immense pressure on the producers and distributors to find an apt release date to recover the huge investments put into the multilingual. Will the other producers take on RRR head-on at the box office or play it sportively by choosing another release date? RRR is produced by DVV Danayya, with cinematography by Senthil Kumar and music by MM Keeravani. ZEE5 has bagged the streaming rights of RRR across all South Indian languages.
