On his birthday last year, Kannada cinema’s Real Star Upendra revealed a teaser for his next directorial UI that literally shook the industry. At a public event held at a single-screen theatre in Bengaluru, he launched a teaser that had absolutely no visuals, with a voiceover by Upendra about the darkness he was engulfed in and the means to escape it.

At the time, the actor-filmmaker had said that since the film’s major portions included CGI, he was not willing to show any visuals until he was completely satisfied with the output. Upendra and the rest of the team has been tight-lipped about the subject, stating only that tit tackles a global issue.

In January this year, he released another teaser – this time with some visuals, but still not enough to form a complete picture about what is in store. Well, if the buzz in industry circles is anything to go by, the wait for clarity on UI is not all that long now. Producer KP Srikanth and Upendra have apparently frozen on the release date of the film, although an official announcement is still pending. Distributors have been sounded off about a possible September 12 release, we are told, which will be less than a week ahead of his birthday (September 18).

Some fans have been speculating that Upendra could target a September 18 release too, but industry insiders say that would be unlikely, as Shivarajkumar’s Bhairathi Ranagal is releasing on September 27 and there has to be sufficient gap between the two films.

UI is Upendra’s return to direction after 2015’s Uppi 2. The film has been described as a surrealist action thriller and has Reeshma Nanaiah, Murali Sharma, Nidhi Subbaiah, Sadhu Kokila, Murali Sharma, Veena Ponnappa, among others on its cast. Music is by Ajaneesh Loknath, while KGF fame Shivakumar is the art director. The film is said to have been made on a whopping Rs 100 crore budget, and was shot completely on a specially erected set.
