The Kelly Reichardt directorial film released on streaming platform Mubi on July 9.
First Cow, the acclaimed film directed by Kelly Reichardt will be premiering exclusively on the global distributor and curated film streaming service platform Mubi in India from July 9. Award-winning director Kelly Reichardt who has previously worked on projects like Meek's Cutoff and Lucy is back with the much-awaited First Cow, an engaging story of friendships and petty crimes in the Old West.
First Cow centres around the story of a lonely skilled cook (played by John Magaro) who has travelled West and ended up joining a gang full of fur trappers in Oregon, eventually striking a true connection with a Chinese immigrant (played by Orion Lee) who is also seeking out his fortune. Soon they end up collaborating on a precarious business of cake-making, whose success and longevity relies upon a wealthy landowner's milking cow, the first and only one in the territory.
Even with a simplistic premise, Reichardt presents an authentic representation of the harsh realities of frontier life in the early nineteenth century, depicting unsettling rural America with all its realism. Post its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, the film has been premiered at various film festivals across the globe, even competing for the Golden Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival. First Cow has won Best Film at the 2020 New York Film Critics Circle Awards and has also been nominated for three Film Independent Spirit Awards including Best Feature and Best Director. The film is considered a magnum opus by one of the most acclaimed independent filmmakers.
First Cow stars John Magaro, Orion Lee, Toby Jones and Ewen Bremner. The script is penned by Jon Raymond and Kelly Reichardt.
