In this Vishal Bharadwaj-directorial, words cannot articulate what facial expressions are capable of. And so, all Tabu and Ali Fazal and Wamiqa Gabbi do is emote through their gloomy mien—screams, stares, erry laughs and silent glares.

Granted, the name Vishal Bharadwaj is synonymous to glorification of gloom on screen, and we have loved his unique depicition of poetic melancholy in all his movies thus far, the recent adaptations in particular. With Khufiya, a Netflix Original, the veteran director-music composer pushes his own limits to tread along uncharacted waters: a thriller with the finest and rawest in the game (pun intended).
As the 47 seconds teaser opens, a deafening sound—perhaps a metaphor for death and destruction—ushers us into the world of a visibly distraught Tabu; pitiful eyes, smeared kohl and all. And what follows is a quick yet impactful montage of actors walking in and out of frames with intense settings of various degrees. If the hazel-eyed Wamiqa Gabbi is seen moaning in pain, Ali Fazal wears a condescending smile; hysterical in his demeanour, and an ever-engaging Ashish Vidyarthi looks on.
If the beginning is bloody good and firecely gripping, we can only imagine what the finished product must look like—at the risk of sounding overenthusiastic; marvellous!
The Netflix film, starring Tabu, Ali Fazal and Wamiqa Gabbi, in leading roles, follows the story of a RAW agent who is hunting a mole down accused of selling the country’s highly confidential defence information.
Directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, Khufiya is based on the novel Escape To Nowhere, and has been written-for-screen by Amar Bhushan.
