Kirsten Dunst to play the lead in Alex Garland’s Civil War

After her powerful performance last year in The Power of the Dog,

Kirsten Dunst is ready to take centre stage as a leading lady yet again. It was announced that the Emmy-nominated actress will star in filmmaker Alex Garland’s upcoming film, titled Civil War.

According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming movie is touted to be an action film that is set in America in a future period. Further plot details are being kept under wraps. In addition to Dunst, the film will also feature Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Cailee Spaeny, among others. The other cast members have featured in well-known works in film and television, including Narcos (Moura); Bruised and Dune (Henderson); and Mare of Easttown (Spaeny).

Garland will write and direct Civil War, which is an A24 film. The filmmaker is perhaps best known for his 2014 science-fiction drama, Ex Machina, which also marked his directorial debut. The film, starring Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, Sonoya Mizuno, and Oscar Isaac in lead roles, won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Garland had been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

The filmmaker's other well-known works include Annihilation (2018), 28 Days Later (2002), Sunshine (2007), Never Let Me Go (2010), and Dredd (2012). He also served as creator and director of the limited series, Devs. He is also currently working on the film, Men, which stars Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear.

Meanwhile, Dunst was last seen in the 2021 Western drama, The Power of the Dog. The movie, directed by Jane Champion and based on the 1967 novel of the same name, starred Benedict Cumberbatch.
