Recently, social media users had started a campaign to get Kristen Stewart to play Batman's nemesis Joker, which would have reunited her with Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson.
In an interview with Variety, Stewart was asked to comment on the online petition. She said: "I love the energy behind that. It’s really been done so well. I feel like, maybe, we don’t traipse over, but I love that gusto. Let’s figure something else out. I’m totally down to play a freaky, scary person."
Asked if she would never entertain the idea of emulating the supervillain, Stewart said she's "not the most stoked", and would like to experiment with something new.
The DC Comics supervillain has famously been played by Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight Rises, 2008), Jared Leto (in the DC Extended Universe since 2016), Jack Nicholson (Batman, 1989), and Joaquin Phoenix (Joker, 2019).
In the character's first live-action appearance on Batman TV show, Cesar Romero played this role. Screen Rant notes that Star Wars alum Mark Hamill has also been the voice of Joker in several animated projects. A gender-swap version of the supervillain has never been played, but could have been a possibility had Stewart been keen to take on the role.
Stewart's began her career as a child and teen actor, but her breakthrough film was the vampire romance drama Twilight, where she played Bella Swan to Pattinson's Edward Cullen. Since then she has starred in a variety of big and small projects like American Ultra, Charlie's Angels, and Underwater.
Her next gig is Spencer, directed by Pablo Larrain, which chronicles the tense relationship between Princess Diana and Prince Charles while they vacation at the Queen's holiday home during Christmas. The film had its premiere at the Venice and Toronto film festivals this year, and is expected to hit cinemas in November.
