Thursday, October 19 turned out to be a rather special box office day for moviegoers in Karnataka with not one but three major releases on offer. One of the lot is the Shiva Rajkumar starrer Ghost which was the sole Kannada release of the week but with Karnataka being a conducive market for films of all languages, the heist action thriller faced a tough battle against Lokesh Kanagaraj's Leo (Tamil) and Anil Ravipudi's Bhagavanth Kesari (Telugu).

Leo, which stars Thalapathy Vijay in the lead, emerged as the biggest release of them all in terms of screen count and the general hype surrounding it.

As a result, the film has taken off to an exceptional start at the box office and the latest trade figures reveal that Vijay might have set a new record for himself. One might have already come across reports of Leo scoring a Rs. 140 crore (+) opening day and similarly, the multistarrer actioner is said to have yielded more than Rs. 13 crores in Karnataka alone. And this, we hear, happens to be the best opening that a Thalapathy Vijay film has received thus far in the state.

In fact, by virtue of these numbers, Leo has become (as per trade reports) the biggest opener of 2023 in Karnataka, surpassing the record set by Challenging Star Darshan's Kranti.

Leo opened in theatres on Thursday with over 1000 screens to its name in Bengaluru alone and the film is also benefitting from the ticket prices, which currently range from Rs. 200 (single screens) to more than Rs. 1000 (multiplexes, IMAX screens). Ghost, on the other hand, is potentially suffering due to the same pricing factor and has thus not delivered great box office results despite the positive reviews.

The same trade reports reveal that Ghost has collected over Rs. 2 crores across India with Bhagavanth Kesari, starring Nandamuri Balakrishna, Kajal Aggarwal, Sreeleela and Arjun Rampal, collecting about Rs. 20 crores (Rs. 1.28 crores in Karnataka).
