Mammootty's Kannur Squad withstands Leo's juggernaut at Kerala box office

A good movie won't just survive but could also thrive. Malayalam superstar Mammootty's latest movie Kannur Squad is the primary example of it. Despite Thalapathy Vijay's new movie Leo taking over the Kerala box office, Kannur Squad has managed to retain a significant number of screens across Kerala. 

According to industry sources, more screens will also be allocated to the movie starting Friday.

It's important to understand the enormous challenge that Kannur Squad is facing at the box office in Kerala following the release of Leo. There's an unprecedented craze for Leo. Even though Vijay has always commanded a huge fan following in the state, no other movies of the star so far have managed to create such a fan frenzy. So much so that Leo became the first movie in the history of the Kerala box office to gross over Rs 10 crore from its ticket sales.

Before Leo's release, Kannada superstar Yash's KGF: Chapter 2 held the record for the biggest opening over Rs 7 crore gross. But, that record has now been shattered, with almost all screens trying to cash in the craze around Leo among the Malayalam-speaking audience. 

Yet, there has been a steady flow of audiences for Kannur Squad necessitating the theatres to retain the movie. It's now running on more than 130 screens in Kerala, while Leo has amassed over 650 screens.

Kannur Squad digital debut soon

Kannur Squad is in its third week and it has already grossed over Rs 75 crore from its worldwide ticket sales. However, it's unlikely to touch the coveted Rs 100 crore mark at the global box office with such fierce competition from Leo.

In the meantime., Kannur Squad is expected to make its OTT debut soon. As per reports, the movie is likely to arrive on the streaming platform by the end of October. However, an official word on the same is awaited.
