It has been a long wait for the trailer of Tovino Thomas and director Basil Joseph’s superhero film Minnal Murali and from what we saw, it’s definitely worth it! The trailer, which was released by Netflix through its YouTube page today, had action, humour, emotions and superhero elements – everything that the makers had been promising since they began the shoot in 2019.
The trailer starts off by introducing Mammukkoya’s character explaining that damage that a lightning strike would cause to a human – third degree burns, cardiac arrest and lungs failure. However, he explains that Tovino’s character Jason hasn’t suffered any of that. Soon, the audience get to see that Jason training in superhero stunts while also confessing that he can’t fly to a child after a failed attempt. The trailer also shows he has superspeed, ability to jump higher, punch stronger and aim precisely.
We also get to see him try out a few disguises including that of a hen costume, swapping a mask for a towel as well as a supersuit with a red mask. The trailer also offers some interesting references to Superman, Spiderman and Batman, and maybe even something akin to a Bat Signal for Minnal Murali.
The film’s director Basil, in the Instagram Live announcing the trailer on Wednesday, said, “It will be a long wait till December, but we are all hoping that it will be worth it. We have tried to make it an exciting movie. We started its scripting in 2018 and Tovino joined in 2019. We faced the challenges together and so all of us who worked in the movie have bonded really well. This was also important as it’s a film made on a big canvas and all of us had to strive to set a benchmark and come out of our comfort zone. We hope the movie and the trailer doesn’t disappoint anyone.”
Talking about the film’s release date, Tovino said, “After watching the first few minutes, you would understand why December 24 is an apt date for Minnal Murali’s release. This is a proper Christmas film.”
Minnal Murali, which marks Tovino’s second collaboration with Basil after Godha, also has Aju Varghese, Harishree Ashokan and Guru Somasundaram as part of the cast. The movie is produced by Sophia Paul and Vlad Rimburg handling the action choreography. The movie, which is Netflix's second direct Malayalam film after Fahadh Faasil's Irul, will also be streaming in English, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu.
