Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s highly-acclaimed drama, Drive My Car, is one of the best films to release last year. The film has captivated and moved the viewers, even with its slightly longer runtime.
While it came as a surprise to many when it was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, it was not a surprise when The Academy announced that the film has won the Oscar for Best International Feature.
The film, which premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, and toured multiple International film festivals, was also screened at the Bangalore International Film Festival and the International Film Festival of Kerala. Fans of Hamaguchi and curious first timers can soon catch the film from the comfort of their homes.
The film follows Yūsuke Kafuku (played by Hidetoshi Nishijima) as he directs a multilingual production of Uncle Vanya in Hiroshima and grapples with the death of his wife, Oto (Reika Kirishma).
Drive My Car is based on Haruki Murakami's short story of the same name from his 2014 collection Men Without Women, while taking inspiration from other stories in it.
The film is an introspection into the more complex emotions of humans, including the reclined effects of love, romance, cheating, sex, and most importantly, closure. With methodically paced writing, captivating visual storytelling and most importantly, moving acting from the leads, Drive My Car becomes a must-watch.
Drive My Car, which also won Best Foreign Language Film at the 79th Golden Globe Awards, will start streaming on Mubi from April 1.
