The Peanut Butter Falcon is our Lost and Found film for today's episode,

Shia LaBeouf, Zack Gottsegen, and Dakota Johnson’s 2019 movie is a curious tale of friendships forged in the unlikeliest of circumstances. The story is as quirky as its title, which centers around Gottsagen’s Zak, a young man with Down syndrome who escapes from his care facility to meet his wrestling idol in person. Along the way, he meets a troubled fisherman Tyler, played brilliantly by Shia LaBeouf, who helps him realize his dream.

Debut filmmakers Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz treat disability with sensitivity and nuance, acknowledging his condition, but never making it his defining personality trait. Despite the protagonists surviving on scraps, there is almost an idyllic charm to their primitive ways of living. The film shuttles between past and present, offering glimpses into Tyler’s protective instinct towards Zak, driven by the guilt of his elder brother's death. Dakota Johnson plays Eleanor, Zak’s well-meaning caregiver, who often gets into arguments with Tyler over the latter’s unorthodox ways of supporting Zak.

This is a film that rests heavily on the shoulders of its actors, and all of them deliver their rawest performances. There aren’t many dialogues in the movie, but when LaBeouf affectionately gazes at Zak and Eleanor dancing around a bonfire, you realize why the filmmakers trusted the actors with this one, punctuated with pregnant silences and profoundly ruminative moments. It is a story about forging ahead even when the odds are stacked against you. It is an adventure, tinged with warmth and hope.
