HBO’s first-ever teen drama Euphoria is one of the most popular TV shows today. Created by Sam Levinson, the series follows the lives of high-school students, with the story told from the perspective of 17-year-old drug-addict Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya. The series has returned for a second season, briefly crashing the app due to the unprecedented traffic and demand for the new season. Let's dig into some trivia now.

1. There is a painful scene in the second episode in season one where Zendaya's character, Rue, and Nika King, who plays her mother Leslie, get into a physical confrontation with each other. The entire scene was improvised to great effect by the actors.

2. The protagonist, Rue’s, drug addiction was inspired by creator Sam Levinson's own personal demons with drug addiction during his younger years.

3. Hunter Schafer who plays Jules and Barbie Ferreira who plays Kat had very unique casting experiences, Ferreira auditioned for the role seven times before she nailed it while Schafer was cast via Instagram audition. However, they both share a common trait for the fact that their own struggles growing up have been woven into their respective character arcs. Schafer’s gender transition at a young age is explored through her character Jules.

4. With the exception of episodes seven and eight, every episode is named after a rap song. Coincidentally even the pilot episode titled, Pilot, is a song by 50 Cent.

5. The show is loosely adapted from an Israeli show of the same name released in 2012. The creators of this Israeli show, Ron Leshem and Daphna Levin, serve as producers for the 2019 American adaptation as well.

6. Jacob Elordi, who plays the notorious Nate Jacobs confessed in an interview with Wonderland magazine that he was down to his last dime before being cast in Euphoria. He allegedly didn’t even have an agent and his audition did not go as smoothly as he would have liked. Despite messing up a few lines, the casting crew saw his potential and cast him.

7. The scene inspired from the film Inception, where an intoxicated and drugged up Rue hallucinates about stumbling through a rotating hallway, was not digitally altered, it is in fact a room created with actors taped to the walls in a real rotating set.

8 Doniella Davy, the makeup designer for the show, claims that the different glittery makeup used has underlying meanings alluding to each character’s arc in a particular episode. This is an unconventional plot device that adds subtext to the overall story.
