Saptaswa Basu’s Doctor Bakshi, which is a spin-off of his film Pratidwandi was reported to have Saswata Chatterjee as the titular Dr. Bakshi, reprising his role from the film.

However, ToI reports that the actor had to pull back from doing the film due to date issues. And Parambrata Chattopadhyay will now step into his shoes as Dr. Bakshi in the thriller. Subhasree Ganguly, Bonny Sengupta, and Maahi Kar have been onboarded for the film too.

Saptaswa reflected on the success of Pratidwandi and that Doctor Bakshi’s character was well-received by the audience. “People liked the idea of a doctor up against medical scams on his own,” he said. This sparked the idea of a spin-off, cast in a fresh storyline with the name as the title. A new cast and a fresh setting will take place. The director added that he wanted to explore the ‘spin-off’ area in Bengali cinema for quite some time.

In his fight against medical scams, Dr. Bakshi has to transgress ethical lines and Saptaswa described his character as a representation of a “brand who serves justice in his own way exposing medical scams.” Subhasree will play Mrinalini, a vlogger, who attends a Poila Boishakh celebrations at a heritage hotel for her social media and vlog content. Here, she meets Aditya played by Bonny and Shraddha, along with few other people, and gets unwittingly embroiled in a murder mystery. Her world turns upside down and at this precise juncture, along comes Doctor Bakshi to help pull the lid off the mystery. Saptaswa further stated that the film falls in the genre of a ‘medical thriller’ and is not a sequel.

The shoot will begin in November, in Kolkata, North Bengal and Sikkim and will most likely release in April 2022.

On the work front, Parambrata Chatterjee will be seen in his directorial Bony, co-starring Koel Mallick in the sci-fi thriller that is adapted from Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay’s novel of the same name. Saswata Chatterjee plays the lead in Aniket Chattopadhyay’s children’s fantasy satire Hobu Chandra Raja Chandra Gobu Chandra Mantri, co-starring alongside Arpita Chatterjee. Both the films are nearing their release on October 10, during Durga Pujo. Bony will have a theatrical release while Hobu Chandra Raja Chandra Gobu Chandra Mantri will premiere on TV.

More details on Doctor Bakshi are awaited.
