Though SS Rajamouli's Magadheera made impressive collections in Tamil Nadu with its Tamil dubbed version Maaveran making decent money at the box office, it was his Eega (Naan Ee in Tamil) which made him a notable filmmaker among regular movie goers in the state. Needless to say, the first part of Baahubali made him even more popular, and its second part went on to become the highest grossing movie in the state, making him a reliable brand.
With RRR, he has proved his pull among Tamil audience again; the magnum opus, starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, registered the second biggest opening in Tamil Nadu this year. According to a few sources, the movie has managed to find place in top five opening day collections during the pandemic era in the state.
Ajith's Valimai holds the first position, followed by Vijay's Master, Rajinikanth's Annaatthe and Dhanush's Karnan. RRR stands at fifth position, surpassing the day one numbers of Suriya's Etharkkum Thunindhavan which released earlier this month.
The word of mouth is encouraging in the state, and with a few notable Kollywood celebrities like Shankar, Sarath Kumar, Sivakarthikeyan and Lokesh Kanagaraj among others posting tweets about the film, it looks like the movie is set for a grand box office hunt this weekend.
Trade analysts, exhibitors and film buffs are eagerly waiting to know how much RRR will collect in the long run in the state. Unlike Baahubali 2 which had an extended run because of its summer release in 2017, this time, there is a potential threat from Vijay's Beast and Yash's KGF 2 in Tamil Nadu.
Venkat Prabhu's Manmatha Leelai, which has a decent buzz among youngsters, is also arriving next Friday. Will the mighty Rajamouli directorial be able to withstand them?
