After the Maharashtra government announced the reopening of cinema halls in the state on 22 October, producers of many of the highly-anticipated Bollywood films have taken the opportunity to officially announce the movie release dates.
Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi, led by Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, will finally be hitting screens worldwide during the Diwali weekend. This Christmas season will witness Ranveer Singh-starrer cricket drama 83. Directed by Kabir Khan, the film will recreate India’s 1983 World Cup victory. However, Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha, which was supposed to open during Christmas as well, has postponed its release date to now arrive in theatres on Valentine's Day 2022. ‘
Close in the heels of 83 will release yet another cricket drama, which is Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey. It’s the official Hindi remake of the 2019 Telugu hit of the same name and will open theatrically on New Year’s Eve.
Ranveer Singh’s other release, Yash Raj Films' Jayeshbhai Jordaar, will release a week after Laal Singh Chaddha, on February 25. Yash Raj Films’ is also backing Akshay Kumar’s Prithviraj, which is slated for a January 22 release. Bunty Aur Babli 2 and Shamshera, also produced under the YRF banner, will release worldwide on November 19 and March 18, 2022, respectively.
Akshay Kumar will also feature in Sajid Nadiadwala’s Bachchan Pandey, which will release on March 4, 2022. Also featuring Jacqueline Fernandez, Kriti Sanon and Arshad Warsi, the movie will see Kumar play a gangster and a wannabe actor. Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar’s Raksha Bandhan is scheduled for an Independence Day release, clashing with Om Raut's Adipurush, starring Prabhas and Saif Ali Khan in the lead.
Sharwanand and Siddharth’s upcoming film Maha Samudram is going to have its OTT premiere on Netflix, latest reports state. The news of its rights being sold to the OTT giant comes days after the trailer raked in over 7 million views on YouTube. The film also stars Aditi Rao Hyderi and Anu Emmanuel in the lead.
Malayalam superstar, Mohanlal, is set to reunite with Shaji Kailas for yet another mass entertainer. The duo previously worked together on hit films from the 2000s such as Narasimham and Aaraam Thampuran.
The popular Nordic period drama series on Amazon Prime is set to have a sequel. The new series titled Vikings: Valhalla will be set 100 years after the original series, and will stream exclusively on Netflix.
One of Hoichoi’s most-loved programmes on the unassuming Bengali detective Eken Babu has now hit a new stride with its fifth season. Premiering on the auspicious occasion of Durga Puja, Eken Babu is set to go on a new adventure to Santiniketan, the heart of Rabindranath Tagore’s inspirational journeys, as well as the seat of the noted Visva-Bharati University.
Jimmy Savile, the infamous television and radio host (mostly worked on BBC projects), will come to life through Steve Coogan’s precision on-screen. Coogan will slip into Savile’s shoes for The Reckoning, a series that’ll follow Savile’s rise to glory, followed by an illustrious BBC career and lastly, his battle to evade growing rumours about his life. Savile’s life garners considerable attention, especially after news broke (posthumously) of his abusive tendencies towards children.
The hit Korean survival thriller Squid Game has helped a surge in stock prices for media companies with upto 70% and 50% for Bucket Studio and Studio Box respectively. The film is currently no.1 on Netflix globally, and is the first Korean film to do so on the platform.
