Can’t wait for The Last of Us season 2? Here’s what to expect

The Last of Us: What to expect from season 2

Last Updated: 12.25 PM, Mar 22, 2023

The Last of Us showrunner Neil Druckmann revealed a teaser image for the second season of the critically-acclaimed video game adaptation. As expected, it will be adapted from the multiple award-winning game The Last of Us Part II, but it will take another year or two before the second season premieres. So while fans eagerly wait in anticipation, we have created a list of what to expect from the second season. This episode of List hai toh hit hai contains spoilers for season two and for those who’re willing to wait for the second season to drop are advised to avoid this podcast. Let's get going then

Part II to split into two seasons

The first season of The Last of Us is a direct adaptation of the first video game. And the second season will be adapted from the second game, The Last of Us Part II. However, the story of the second game is considerably longer than the first, so it seems likely that showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann will split the story across two seasons.

The introduction of Abby

Fans of the video games will be more than familiar with Abby, one of the new main characters of the second The Last of Us Part II. In many ways, Abby is probably a more pivotal character than Joel and Ellie. Abby will most likely be introduced in the very first episode of the second season. And it will be an introduction that will leave an indelible mark on new fans of the franchise. For the unversed, Abby is the daughter of the Firefly surgeon who Joel murders in season one, and she is one person Joel should not have trifled with.

The WLF vs the Seraphites

One of the most significant additions to The Last of Us Part II video game are the two warring settlements in Seattle, the heavily-militarised Washington Liberation Front or the WLF and the primitivist cult called the Seraphites, also known as Scars, who are settled in an island formed in Seattle due to heavy flooding in the city. Season two will likely explore both settlements and their contrasting ideologies, as well as the history surrounding their fierce conflict.

Ellie, Dina, and Jessie share a love triangle

The second game opens with Ellie and Dina becoming a couple. However, it is later revealed that Dina is pregnant from her relationship with her ex-boyfriend Jessie. Even though Ellie, Dina, and Jessie remain friends, the impending arrival of the baby does complicate things.

The never-ending cycle of violence and revenge

The second game’s central theme is about the never-ending cycle of violence that fuelled vengeance. This will also be the pivotal theme of the second season of the show as well. The story will focus on how revenge can consume a person to the extent that they are blinded by rage, blurring the lines between right and wrong.

Ellie and Joel’s trip to the museum

One of the most heartwarming subplots of the entire franchise is when Joel takes Ellie to an abandoned museum for her birthday. Ellie is able to fulfil her lifelong dream of exploring the cosmos through the museum’s well-preserved space section and its scale models of space shuttles and other space tech.

More infected

Despite earning overwhelming praise from both fans and critics alike, there was one minor criticism most legacy fans levelled against the show. This revolves around the fact that there were hardly any infected in the second half of season one. In fact, apart from a few flashback scenes, there are no infected encounters after the fifth episode, Endure and Survive. Showrunners Mazin and Druckmann have reassured fans that the second season will definitely feature more infected and we’re only too stoked to see how these mutations affect living beings and influence their behaviour.

The Shamblers and the Rat King

As most of the second or even third season of the series will take place in Seattle, we can expect the introduction of a couple of new types of truly horrifying infected beings. One of them is called a Shambler, a giant infected creature similar to the Bloater featured in episode five of season one, who has the ability to spray gaseous acid towards its victims. But the second is even more terrifying, and it is called the Rat King. In the second game, Abby has an encounter with the Rat King at a hospital which was ground zero of the outbreak in Seattle. The Rat King is a truly grotesque infected creature, even bigger than the Bloaters and Shamblers. It is a mutation of several infected joined together into a single torso and functions like a giant monster. If that wasn't already horrifying enough, you’ll be terrified to know that it is virtually impossible to eliminate this creature.

Well that's all we got for this episode of List hai toh hit hai, until the next one it's your host Nikhil signing out.
