Now You Know

Welcome to another episode of OTTplay Now You Know, I'm your host Nikhil

The anti-superhero team called The Boys are back for a third season on Prime Video. The critically acclaimed black comedy satire is more ‘diabolical’ than ever before as the ragtag team of misfits hunt down superheroes. Here are some lesser-known facts about the hit TV show. Let's dive in

  1. Translucent, the superhero with powers of invisibility and impenetrable skin is a new character created specifically for the television series. In the graphic novel, however, this position in the superhero team called the Seven was held by Jack from Jupiter, a parody of the DC character Martian Manhunter.
  2. Son of actors Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, Jack Quaid essays the role of Hughie in the TV show. In the comic book, Hughie is modelled after British actor Simon Pegg. In fact, Pegg plays the role of Hughie’s father in the series.
  3. It was reported that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were tapped to direct the pilot, however, Dan Trachtenberg was hired after Rogen and Goldberg dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.
  4. The superpowered character called the Deep, is a parody of the DC Comics superhero Arthur Curry aka Aquaman. However, in the graphic novel, the Deep is actually based on David Hyde aka Black Manta, the arch-nemesis of Aquaman.
  5. Actress Brec Bassinger had auditioned to play the role of Annie January aka Starlight in the TV show. The role, however, went to Erin Moriarty. Bassinger would later essay the titular role in the TV series Stargirl, and interestingly enough Stargirl is the original DC character that inspired the character Starlight in The Boys.
  6. The villain of the second season, Stormfront, is actually inspired by the DC character Shazam, formerly known as Captain Marvel. For the TV show, the character changed to a Nazi woman from the World War II-era but with superhero powers similar to Shazam. It is also interesting to note that Stormfront shares her name with an infamous Neo-Nazi Internet forum.
