Things you didn't know about The Good Nurse

The latest Netflix true-crime drama The Good Nurse tells the story of how a nurse helped the authorities apprehend her colleague, who was eventually found guilty of killing patients for several years. The film stars Eddie Redmayne in the lead as the infamous serial killer Charles Cullen while Jessica Chastain essays the role of Amy Loughren, the ‘good nurse’ who worked with law enforcement. So for today’s List hai toh hit hai podcast, we take a look at things you didn’t know about The Good Nurse.

1. The serial killer known as Charles Cullen was called the ‘angel of death’ by American media. It is a reference to the Nazi doctor Josef Mengele who conducted heinous experiments on prisoners at Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. Even though the crimes were significantly different in terms of execution, the fact that both Cullen and Mengele were medical practitioners became the reason why they shared a common nickname.
2. Cullen is believed to have killed his first victim in 1988. He is confirmed to have killed 29 people over a span of 16 years since, but it is believed the number may have been closer to 400. He is currently serving 18 consecutive life sentences at the New Jersey State Prison and is only eligible for parole in the year 2388!
3. Cullen’s motives for killing his victims have always baffled investigators. He claims that he was compelled to commit these despicable acts to relieve the patients from pain and suffering. He added heart medication and insulin into IV fluids for patients over 60. However, there are several contradictory reports claiming that many of the patients were recovering before he murdered them.
4. The film does not focus on Charles Cullen, it in fact puts Amy Loughren at the center of its narrative. The character is played by Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain and she is believed to have been instrumental in the arrest of Cullen.
5. The film is actually based on the book by Charles Graeber titled The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder. Netflix is set to release a documentary called Capturing the Killer Nurse which focuses on how Cullen was taken in by law enforcement.
6. Like most stories about serial killers Charles Cullen also had a troubled childhood according to reports. The youngest of seven children, Cullen was often bullied at school and was also hazed during his time in the Navy. It is believed that he attempted to take his own life twice before taking a different career route and becoming a nurse.
