The incident of a hairstylist trying to set herself ablaze has infuriated the Bengali film industry. Earlier, the hairstylist was suspended for some months by the Cine and Video Hair Stylist Guild — a part of the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Easter India. She came back. But she complained that she was stripped of several works. The artist, who is under massive debt, allegedly tried to set herself on fire when her daughter rescued her. In fact, the police stations allegedly took nearly a whole day to finally lodge a complaint of harassment against the guild and Federation.

The Director Association of East India released a statement on social media. Parambrata Chatterjee and Ritwick Chakraborty shared the post. The post warned, “The civil society of the state, including the film workers, television workers, OTT, Short film, admakers, and our audience, should know some things. The alarm bell is ringing in the village and the city, even at our workplace.”

The post said that the artist was suspended for two and a half months and she went through sheer monetary trouble. ‘Her suspension period ended, but then the blow came. The Guild told her that she could work on only those projects that the Guild recommends. She can’t take work according to her wishes. If she further criticizes the Federation’s work or the Guild’s rules, harsher steps will be taken.’

The artist blamed some people in her suicide note. Most of them are the office bearers of the hairstylists’ association. The statement said ‘We, the people from the industry, all know that those 26 guilds under the Federation are puppets. They are compelled to take such illegal, wrong, cruel, and immoral steps at the order of the executive committee of the Federation.’

The statement also said ‘No detective agency is needed to prove that their autocracy is completely illegal. Any lawyer will confirm that. Still, why do the crews abide by them? It is the eternal truth. Making the daily wage earners scared by triggering their lack of security. Becoming god to them. And now our colleague is at the doorstep of death today.’

The statement said ‘We want the removal of those whose decision made this happen. We want all the illegal rules to be revoked.’ The statement ended with the lines ‘It is time to uproot this poisonous tree. It is time to plant a new tree. Everyone, please extend your hands.’

Parambrata shared this statement and asked all to read it. Ritwick Chakraborty and Kaushik Ganguly also shared it.
