Fahadh Faasil, or FaFa as his fans love to call him, is the flag bearer of the new age of Malayalam cinema. Known for playing unconventional and eccentric characters in films such as Kumbalangi Nights, C U Soon, Malik, and Joji, the acclaimed actor has won plaudits for his performances across India. So for today’s List hai toh hit hai podcast, we take a look at some of his lesser-known films.

Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (2017) - Disney+ Hostar

The multiple award-winning Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum is an underrated gem. Fahadh Faasil essays the role of a thief who is caught stealing a woman’s necklace before he swallows in an attempt to destroy the evidence. However, the cops keep him in custody until the evidence can be retrieved. This black comedy drama film also features The Great Indian stars Suraj Venjaramoodu and Nimisha Sajayan in lead roles.

Njan Prakashan (2018) - Netflix, Manorama Max

The film Njan Prakashan follows the story of the notoriously lazy Prakashan who refuses to work. Instead, he plots a scheme to get married to someone who can take him abroad to a more affluent nation on a dependent or spousal visa. Unfortunately for the conniving Prakashan, life has other plans for him and he ends up having to take a more humbling path to happiness.

Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016) - Manorama Max

Maheshinte Prathikaaram, written by acclaimed writer Syam Pushkaran and directed by Dileesh Pothan, was a groundbreaking film that introduced Malayalam audiences to a new style of cinema. Fahadh Faasil essays the role of Mahesh, an unassuming photographer who leads a quiet life. But a series of events forces him to take an oath to never wear footwear until he gets revenge on the person who beat him up in front of the whole town. The comedy-drama film was lauded by both fans and critics in Kerala when it hit theaters in 2016.

Iyobinte Pusthakam (2014) - Disney+ Hostar

Filmmaker Amal Neerad is renowned for his stylised visuals and action sequences. But his films have been often criticized for lacking substance to match the style. The 2014 film Iyobinte Pusthakam is an exception, however. Set in pre-independence Kerala, the story is a drama about a powerful family and the fight for its inheritance set against the backdrop of political upheaval in Kerala.

North 24 Kaatham (2013) - Disney + Hotstar, Manorama Max

Fahad Faasil essays the role of a soft-spoken software engineer named Hari who has extreme OCD. But when he is forced to take a trip to Trivandrum as part of his work, it unexpectedly becomes a journey of self-discovery and growth for Hari. Nedumudi Venu and Swathi Reddy play other important roles in this comedy drama.

Amen (2013) - SunNxt

Filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery has become well known across India in recent years for helming films such as Jallikattu and Churuli. But his first major hit was the 2013 comedy film Amen. This groundbreaking film redefined the comedy genre film with its deadpan laced with elements of fantasy. It is arguably one of Pellissery’s best films and stars Fahad Faasil in the lead.
