Once again the netizens are divided broadly into two hemispheres of argument, one in support of Will Smith and the other criticizing his actions. Tota Roy Choudhury also joined the bandwagon clearly in support of Smith.
While talking to ETimes Roy Choudhury stated, “Why just one? If I was in Will Smith’s place I would have slapped Chris 2-3 times. I believe Smith has done the right thing. I have seen how these anchors crack jokes on celebs and sometimes these jokes are not at all funny (Sic).”
Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, who announced several years ago that she has alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss. Her husband took immediate action by walking up to the stage and landing a slap on Rock’s cheek during the ceremony. And that single slap launched a million takes, opinions, and memes.
Choudhury opined that making a joke about someone’s illness is simply not done.
He also stated that Rock might have earned a huge fortune over the years but it doesn’t mean that he can blurt out anything on stage. Choudhury recalls facing similar experiences in Bengali Award ceremonies as well when the funnyman simply forgets to stop and eventually ends up hurting others’ feelings.
Meanwhile, Smith has apologised and officially condoned his outburst in an Instagram post and confessed that he was out of line and is not proud of his actions. However, he added that a joke about someone’s medical condition was not in a good taste thus he reacted emotionally.
Rock has declined to press charges against the actor.
