Up for love: This quirky romcom is a perfect date night watch

Every once in a while we chance upon a romcom that’s so delicious it just sweeps us off our feet. The true test for a romcom lies in its ability to engage the audience to such an extent… that we’re compelled to root for the couple on the screen as they tide over all obstacles that test their relationship. Laurent Tirard’s Franco-Belgian romantic comedy Up for love is definitely one such ride. And it’s our Lost and Found for today.

Starring Jean Dujardin (best known for the Oscar-winning silent film The Artist) and Virginie Efira, this one’s ideal for those date nights with the significant other.

The film revolves around a chance encounter between Alexandre (a celebrated architect who happens to be a little person) and Diane (a recently-divorced lawyer). The two are instantly drawn to each other and Alexandre manages to charm Diane with his free-wheeling approach to life and his ability to look beyond how the world perceives him to be. Things get sticky when Diane plans to introduce him to her parents. It also doesn’t help that Diane runs a law firm with her ex-husband who can’t come to terms with her relationship with Alexandre.

The highlight of this film has to be the vertically-challenged hero who manages to conjure just enough flair to not just flawlessly court the leading lady but also get her family to recognise his true self. The film is packed with socially awkward situations that lead to much hilarity and Dujardin drives every scene with unparalleled conviction.

Up for love is a remake of the Argentinian comedy Corazón de León and we can assure you that this one makes for a breezy watch. Especially when you’re not in the mood for a complex plot or one that demand’s undivided attention.
