The Dilwale actor said in an interview with India Today that he was dying to work with Kabir Singh actor. Varun, who made his debut with Karan Johar's 2012 film, Student Of The Year said, "We did one song and it did so well. So I just wanted to work with her as an actor and felt that our jodi or pair didn't get the limelight it needed or the platform. So this was perfect for both of us." Varun and Kiara had earlier collaborated for the song First Class in the 2019 film Kalank.
Varun also talked about how he landed up the role in JugJugg Jeeyo. He said it was he who approached the filmmaker Raj Mehta after he heard from a friend that he is being hesistant to ask him to play the role. The Judwaa 2 actor said the makers were not sure if they should start filming or not due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He knew Raj well as they had worked earlier on the films Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Raj was an assistant director for these projects. Varun said that his friend who is very close to Raj told him to speak to him as he had the film's script but was not sure if Varun would be interested to do it. The actor then called Raj and gave him few bad words and told him, "Are you mad?' If you have something good please come to me." Varun then went to Raj and got the script. That's how he got the role.
