The 96th Academy Awards, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), is all set to take place at Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles on March 10, 2024. The extravaganza ceremony will honour the best films of 2023. Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, are the most prestigious accolades in world cinema.
For the unversed, the Academy Awards are considered the pinnacle of achievement in cinema. Among the various categories, the ‘Big Five’ such as Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay (Original or Adapted), these categories hold the most significance. Earning a nomination in any of these categories is a remarkable feat, and achieving nominations across all five is a rare and extraordinary accomplishment.

Across nearly a century, only three films have managed to win all five of the most prestigious Academy Awards categories - Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay (Original or Adapted). These films are It Happened One Night (1934), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), and The Silence of the Lambs (1991), stand out for their exceptional quality, gripping storyline, mind-blowing visuals, amazing directions, and enduring popularity.
It Happened One Night is still considered the greatest romance-comedy of all time. The film is a cult-classic particularly for its plot. In the romance-comedy, Claudette Colbert portrayed Ellie Andrews, a pampered socialite who elopes with a gold-digging pilot. Forced to flee from her disapproving father, Ellie embarks on a cross-country bus journey to reunite with her husband. Along the way, she encounters Peter Warne, a down-on-his-luck reporter, who strikes a deal: he'll help her reach her destination in exchange for an exclusive scoop on her story. As their journey unfolds, sparks begin to fly between the unlikely pair, despite their contrasting backgrounds and clashing personalities. Their blossoming romance faces a series of comical hurdles, testing the strength of their newfound connection.
Other than these three films - It Happened One Night (1934), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), and The Silence of the Lambs (1991), not a single film has achieved the remarkable feat that remains unmatched, even after decades of exceptional filmmakings.

This year Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer created history by achieving the highest thirteen nominations at the 96th Academy Awards. ABC will broadcast the Oscars for free in the US. Channel 7 will broadcast the Oscars in Australia, ITV in the UK, and on Star Movies or Star World in India. Watch the highest honourable ceremony on March 11 at 4:30 am in India.
