The year 2022 has plenty in store, promising an exciting catalogue of films and TV shows, both regional and from across the globe. While popular streaming platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, and Sony LIV lead the way in terms of both and quality in India, some of the lesser-known platforms such as Voot, Lionsgate Play, BookMyShow Stream, Hoichoi, Zee5, and Aha have also claimed a stake in India’s OTT space. There could be no arguments that stream platforms have seen steady growth during the pandemic, with several filmmakers including global giants such as Disney and Warner Bros releasing major blockbusters such as Black Widow and Denis Villeneuve’s Oscar front-runner Dune simultaneously in theatres and on streaming platforms. While it seems unlikely that major Hollywood studios would follow a similar release strategy in 2022 as evident from the incredible success of Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home and Warner Bros’ The Batman. However major regional releases continue to contemplate whether to release in theatres or on OTT. Regardless of which films skip theatrical releases, the OTT ecosystem has had new subscribers in large numbers this past year and looks likely to grow even further. Netflix film releases of 2022 such as Munich: Edge of War, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Adam Project, have already proved that there is still an audience for OTT releases. Upcoming Netflix releases such as Knives Out 2, Enola Holmes 2, and Gray Man continue to generate interest. L TV shows such as Inventing Anna, The Last Kingdom, Outlander, Ozark, continue to generate high viewership numbers for the platform. One of the biggest investors of online content in 2022 and beyond is AppleTV+ with shows such as Foundation, Invasion, Ted Lasso and The After Party. They’ve also released award-winning films such as Coda.
