There is some magic in the monsoon. The first drops of rain are of course magical but can anybody beat the feeling that you get when you confess your love in the rains? Silent, loud, subtle – all kinds of confessions happened between Karan Kapoor (Saif Ali Khan) and Rhea Prakash (Rani Mukerji) in Kunal Kapoor’s Hum Tum.

“Hum Tum mein sirf ek hi problem hai – ki tum ke bagair hum adhoore hai.” Thank God that Hum Tum did not end at unrequited love. While we believed that only a Shah Rukh Khan can woo a Kajol in a Kuch Kuch Hota Hai or DDLJ and the magic cannot be repeated, here was a movie which came close.

Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji’s pairing was unusual in Hum Tum but so was the story. It is what made this adorable couple everyone’s favourite back when it released. Hum Tum is the magic created through monsoon.

“Saanson Ko Saanson Mein Dhalne Do Zara.” Why, you ask? Because, “Yeh zindagi bahut lambi hai aur hamaare paas waqt, bahut kam.”

Karan Kapoor, a sketch artist, who would tell stories through his caricature, knew exactly what he wanted from life. He never met anyone like Rhea Prakash and somewhere knew he might never meet her again. However, our Karan Kapoor cannot let go of his playboy image and trying to charm/flirt with every girl he meets. That is till Rhea forces him to look into the mirror and see who is he and how he is becoming exactly what he never wanted to be.

Like we mentioned, rains are a very common sight in Hum Tum, especially when it came to ‘Hum’ Karan and ‘Tum’ Rhea finally being intimate with and about each other. In fact, the hint of the rains was in their first meeting itself.

Turbulence during first awkward meeting

Karan knows his tricks to charm any woman in the world. He gets bored very easily and thus, believes women are his bait. Only this time, he found Rhea, who wasn’t interested in him for the longest time. She did not fall for any of the traps Karan lay down for her and that made Rhea very special. Ever since, Karan knew he wanted someone like Rhea in his life and if possible, Rhea herself. As this feeling overwhelmed him, these two were overwhelmed in the plane thanks to a turbulence, that happens during the rainy season. This established that the movie would have two things for sure – something weird happening everytime they meet and there will be rains, probably lots of it.

Karan makes a mistake (nothing new here) and confesses his love for Rhea, to strangers

Still unable to talk to Rhea, Karan confesses his love for her to strangers. Yeah, it went to that extent. It was raining, he got drunk with the servers of the restaurant where his brother hosted an engagement party and Karan spoke to these strangers about how Rhea means a lot to him but that he is not a good man and so, she doesn’t deserve him. He, of course, forgot how she has been throwing hints like ‘opposites attract’ because ‘this man doesn’t even remember his brother’s birthday’ (there’s a whole scene around that in the film). In short, for the first time, a girl is not a bimbo. Thank you, Kunal.

Lamhon ki guzaarish hai yeh, paas aa jaaye Hum Tum

There is a whole song dedicated to this couple and it is completely shot in the rains. This track is titled Hum Tum (also known as Saanson Ko Saanson Mein). Of course, it is a dream sequence but does the job – of showing where Karan and Rhea are in their life. She has just come to know that Karan likes her and she has been hiding her feelings for him too. Throughout the song, they go through the various phases from a relationship to wedding and parenthood. Yes, they get engaged and she imagines being pregnant at one point too.

All of that obviously happens but only as the film ends and that was not a dream sequence. What happened after this song though is that finally, Karan and Rhea found their peace – in each other’s arms.

Rhea before everyone for Karan

In a previous scene, Karan and Rhea got intense when he joked that kids and their pet doggo Tommy are important to him and Rhea comes after them. As the movie nears its end, the rains make their way through the confession, in January (because weird things happen to Karan and Rhea, remember?) She warns Karan to always take care of her before the children and their pet, right after confessing that she read his book and understood it was about her. “Ek dost ki yaad aa gayi,” she said when Karan asked her feedback on the book. She then asked him to confess his love and the two have their happy ending, all while it still rains. Now isn’t that in itself magical? Or should we say "Lamho Ki Guzaarish Hai Ke, Paas Aa Jaaye Hum Tum?"
