Director Suseenthiran may have made his directorial debut in 2019 with Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu, but when the filmmaker is back with yet another love story, this time titled 2K Love Story, he feels that he making his first film again. With the film scheduled to release for Valentine’s Day (February 14), the director joins OTTplay for a conversation.
Asked if had any skepticism about how his film and his ideas would be accepted by the new generation, Suseenthiran says, “I did not think like that, because I had made a tougher script Aadhalal Kadhal Seiveer which I handled well. With 2K Love Story, I showed the positive side of this generation, which I think will be accepted. This story is an awareness on how parents of today’s generation should handle and understand their children.”
The 2K Love Story director notes that once for every five years, audiences’ tastes change. “Every five years once, a new set of audience emerge, and we need to understand them. If you see five years back, a boy would have a lover, but now a woman could be as important as a friend as much as there is a lover. It is the same if you swap the gender as well. That is a healthy trend, and parents of today’s times are not understanding it. We have shown that in the film.”
The upcoming film is predominantly on youngsters, and speaking of which brings us to how Tamil cinema lacks a latest generation of artistes. “From now on, it is very hard for a producer to listen to a script and accept a young hero. Because there is business involved. Only if a young artiste can back himself and become a hero, it is possible. For instance, in this film, friends pooled in money to produce the film. Otherwise, it is very hard to find new faces purely based on talent. In fact, I had also pitched shows where youngsters can showcase their talent, but with no background. I have always been an ardent supporter of young actors with no background get a pedestal to enter industry, which is why I gave a chance for Vijay Sethupathi in Naan Mahaan Alla. Similarly, in 2K Love Story, I have introduced a few young artistes who can use this film as stepping stone.”
Suseenthiran says that he is not very much into making love stories because, “Love is important for a society to be caste free. But as we have also glorified and purified love so much. In that way, I have not done love stories and 2K Love Story is also not a love story,” he adds.
The director continues that making this film is like a refresher course to understand today’s generation, which in turn made him more empathizing of youngsters. “I think cinema and society are entwined. The idea of what is romance, is interchangeable between these two elements as they constantly feed into each other,” the director concludes.
2K Love Story is set to hit theatres on February 14.
