Shamla Hamza, an unintentional actor, has gained attention after winning the Best Actress title at the 55th Kerala State Film Awards for her role in the critically praised movie, Feminichi Fathima. The film's theatrical release in Kerala after its run at multiple film festivals brought further recognition to the actress who portrayed the lead character, Fathima, in the most charming and poignant way. In an interview with OTTplay, Shamla discussed how the film changed her life and how thrilled she was to get the prestigious award.
At first, you intended to be a lyricist. Did you ever have any interest in or plans for acting?
I never intended to act; instead, I wanted to work as a songwriter or in the field of media. I didn't feel comfortable being on screen, but with Aayirathonnu Nunakal, all changed. My fears of being in front of the camera were dispelled during a week-long workshop that took place prior to filming. I became aware of the performer in me as a result, and I quickly began to like acting. I had the opportunity to play with Feminichi Fathima in 2024 after Aayirathonnu Nunakal was released in 2022.
How do you feel about winning the Kerala State Film Awards' Best Actress category?
I still find it unbelievable that I received this esteemed honour. The more I think about it, the happier I am. I can't wait to accept this prize at an event alongside Mammukka and other notable artistes. I am extremely grateful and delighted for the entire Feminichi Fathima team.
What would you say about your journey to Feminichi Fathima?
At first, it was an uphill struggle because I had recently given birth to my daughter and was anxious about how to manage both equally. However, since there is a lot of room for performance and these kinds of opportunities are seldom to come by, I was reluctant to turn down this offer. My journey from IFFK to the present has been nothing short of a dream, thus it was worth it to push myself with confidence.

The scene where Fathima handed over the mattress to the Tamil woman and she looked emotionally at the lady carrying it away is my favourite part of the movie. What is your take on it?
It's difficult to choose a favourite scene, and the one you mentioned was undoubtedly among the most poignant ones. Another scene shows Fathima standing helplessly while her husband warns her not to make decisions in his home. I found the parts in which Fathima is shown sitting and eating by herself to be really moving.
What was the most significant input you received from the director for your role as Fathima that truly improved your performance?
We used to have easygoing lengthy conversations about every scene, which undoubtedly improved my performance. Fazil Muhammad knew exactly what was and wasn't necessary. Feminichi Fathima demonstrates his exemplary filmmaking skills.
Have you got any acting offers after Feminichi Fathima?
I got one after this film but couldn't commit due to personal obligations. I hope I get more chances to take act.
