Anchor-turned-actor Rio Raj will be having his third release this year (after Sweetheart! and Niram Marum Ulagil), with the upcoming romantic drama Aan Paavam Pollathathu. Much like another 2025 Tamil film, Thalaivan Thalaivii, Aan Paavam Pollathathu too talks about the complexities of married life, and what the couple go through.
Speaking about Aan Paavam Pollathathu, Rio Raj says, “I think there will be less of romance and more of drama. I am someone who sees a lot of genres, but I particularly like commercial entertainers. Aan Paavam Pollathathu is a genre which I think we have been missing for a while. Remember the times in 90s and early 2000s when we switch on television and watch films over a Sunday afternoon, I wanted to make such a film. Aan Paavam Pollathathu will be one such film, which is family-oriented and more like a relaxed watch.”

Just as when many feel that that type of films have been missing from Tamil cinema for a while, Rio Raj gives examples such as Kudumbasthan and Tourist Family which released earlier this year. “I am happy about how films of this genre is coming and they are also turning into hits. This is what we need now. Kudumbasthan talks about how a family of today’s generation works,” he adds.
Aan Paavam Pollathathu, as the title speaks, suggests to how the film might lean towards the man’s side of arguments, but is that it? Rio Raj answers, “We haven’t just shown one side. Even as the title is like that, we will be showing both the man and the woman’s side. It will be balanced, but now, there are many outlets and means that highlight the problems faced by women. But there are also sizeable problems for men too, and it has their perspective too. Often, men are asked and expected not to cry or show their feelings, which is why, through Aan Paavam Pollathathu, we thought to vent it out.” Rio Raj says that after reading the film’s script, he felt it was close to reality and adds that the film will not only talk about the issue but also will suggest a solution.
The actor is someone who believes that films are a vehicle to carry the culture from one generation to another, being reflective of what those times were. “A hero’s style is something that many want to mimic in real life. Many of the film references are also being used in our daily life, and in Aan Paavam Pollathathu."
After starring in romantic films like Sweetheart and Joe, Rio Raj talks about how the genre might be the same but romance has the ability to be presented in different forms. “Joe talks about second chances, while Sweetheart is about body rights, and the greys in each one of us. Aan Paavam Pollathathu talks about the complexities of married life.”
Rio Raj concludes the conversation by saying that Aan Paavam Pollathathu will not be preachy but imparts some wisdom on marriages. “Sometimes or even always, partners cannot be 50-50 in their marital life, and that is okay is what this film says. All the love stories we have read and watched have taught us to think that partners are half-and-half, and that is what gives them happiness. But there is no such thing as a 50-50 partnership, and that is what this film talks about,” the actor signs off.
