For actor Shiva, mostly known as Mirchi Shiva, his brand of films and comedy like Thamizh Padam and Kalakalappu has made him indispensable for the type of roles he does, which are both wacky and quirky. And what came off as a surprise is when Shiva paired up with director Ram for the upcoming Paranthu Po, a film which can get as serious as the filmmaker’s previous works, while also being as light and comical as much as Shiva is known for onscreen.
“Regular films are like a race; it has got lot of business and competition. If six people are running on the ground, then it is hard. But what if I am the only one running, so it has been a deliberate and known effort to do my brand of films. Right from Chennai 600028, it was a conscious and deliberate understanding that no one else can do what I can and vice versa,” Shiva says.
When Ram approached Shiva, the actor came with the understanding that the filmmaker would have zeroed in on him, knowing his previous filmography. “Once I heard the script, I too believed that I am correct for the role, and he has chosen me to do the film. And that is how the project came together too,” he adds.
Known for his comical roles even as he plays protagonists, asked if such actors get sidelined as opposed to ones who take up rather serious characters, Shiva says, “Only for comedy we have to work on the sequences and situations. But when you do a serious role, you have to feel the character. There is no need to give your life to act some character. It is only about how you feel.”
Elaborating on Parandhu Po, Shiva says it’s a film about parents who want to give the best to their son, and what they sacrifice in doing so. “It is a film based on millions of true stories, and a story that will be easily relatable.”
The actor talks about how the film is about a middle-class family that witnesses both ups and downs. “How they handle the situation is very important. For example, right now, credit and loans are very easy to get. But it was not the case at the time. But why are we getting more loans? It is because our wants have gotten bigger. In the film, Aju Varghese plays the role of my crush’s (played by Anjali) husband. We meet them during the journey, and the lifestyle they have is completely opposite. They live a relaxed life and are content with what they have. The moral of the film is that let’s not complicate life, because it is simple. The film says ‘Fly Away’, and it is said only if a person is stuck, or has a weight on them. The film essentially talks about this in a light-hearted way.”
Shiva concludes the conversation by saying that Parandhu Po is a film that is natural and light, much like how it appears to be.
