Lukman Avaran has frequently proved his talent for acting in a number of Malayalam flicks. Alappuzha Gymkhana, the most recent sports drama directed by Khalid Rahman, is among the young star's filmography. The Saudi Vellaka star discussed his experience of working with directors who have a unique storytelling style and what most excited him about Alappuzha Gymkhana in an exclusive chat with OTTplay.
When you decided to play Antony Joshua at Alappuzha Gymkhana, what excited you the most?
Like everyone else, I was eagerly awaiting Khalid Rahman's next directorial. I did not wait to commit since I firmly believe in him as a filmmaker. The main reason I was interested was that this was his second directorial project after Thallumaala. Additionally, actors rarely have the opportunity to embark on physically taxing projects. In fact, it was exciting to prepare for boxing and do intense workouts. Additionally, this served as inspiration to keep up physical fitness. Preparations began gradually before the three months of intense training. Overall, after hearing the excellent reviews for the film and the character, I am pleased that all of these efforts paid off.
You started out in films in supporting parts with well-known Malayalam actors like Mammootty, Kunchacko Boban and Soubin Shahir. What impact did the experiences have on your acting career?
When you stop to think about it, I was lucky to have those chances from the start. The performer in me has greatly benefited from sharing screen space with these actors. As a human being and as an artiste, I learnt more.
Which of your films, in your opinion, deserved more recognition?
For films like Corona Dhavan, Anchakkallakokkan, and Perumani, I anticipated more acclaim. They all have distinct styles and moods that are worthy of praise. I have high hopes for every movie I work on, but occasionally, some don't turn out the way we expect. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with talented actors, technicians, and filmmakers. I am an easygoing movie buff who doesn't dwell too much on shortcomings.
Do you deliberately choose to collaborate with filmmakers who use unconventional storytelling techniques?
All I can say is that I consider myself lucky for having the chance to work along with directors like them. Seeing how each director approaches a scene and shapes the actors into the characters is intriguing. Every set creates a new atmosphere that offers us more room as performers. I have also been fortunate enough to collaborate with filmmakers I have previously worked with. This gives me the sense that I am doing my job well.
You upcoming projects?
My next film is with Kadina Kadoramee Andakadaham's director, Muhashin. The other line-up of movies includes Athibheekara Kaamukan and Tiki Taka. Only a few of my scenes have been filmed for Tiki Taka; the other sequences will be included in the next schedule. With Rohith's calibre of work, the Asif Ali-starrer is certain to be remarkable.
