Sougata Basu has specialised in thrillers that delve into historical tales. From Alinagarer Golokdhadha to Tansener Tanpura and Rudrabinar Obhishaap – his works focus on music, tradition, lores and cultural stories that build the cornerstone of our history. After the massive success of Tansener Tanpura and Rudrabinar Obhishaap, the third chapter of Alaap and Shruti’s (Vikram Chatterjee and Rupsa Chatterjee) adventure has already secured a go-ahead from Hoichoi. Besides the primary work on the third season, another series that will delve into the history of old Kolkata is also on and will go on the floors by the end of this month. In an exclusive chat with OTTplay, the writer talk about his projects.

Revealing the basic idea of the next season of Tansener Tanpura and Rudrabinar Obhishaap, Sougata confirms that the new series will also deal with the same universe of Anandagarh. “Without divulging many details, I can assure you that the new season will delve into a genre of Bengal’s spiritual music that has deep roots in Indian Classical music. But it is in a nascent stage. I am working on the primary consent note,” says the writer.

Talking about the success of the series, he says that he and the entire Hoichoi team had little idea that the show would do so well. “This is technically the first web series on Indian Classical music. We had no idea how the audience would react. We were pleasantly surprised to see the way people enjoyed the show. Tansener Tanpura was the highest viewed show on Hoichoi last year. Just to get the record straight, Tansener Tanpura was dropped before Bandish Bandits. It is hurtful to see people claiming that the show is a ‘cheap copy’ of Bandish Bandits. Also, the two series are completely different in nature,” he says.

Meanwhile, another thriller web series by the writer is all geared up to go to the floors. The new one delves into the history of the old Calcutta. Sougata has penned Karna Subarner Guptodhon, with director Dhrubo Banerjee, and Rabindra Rahasya Kabya, with Sayantan Ghosal. Produced by Eskay Movies, Rabindra Rahasya Kabya features Ritwick Chakraborty and Srabanti Chatterjee in the lead. The shooting of the first leg of the film took place in London in May-June.
