Filmmaker Emcy Joseph's latest directorial, Meesha, hit the big screen on August 1. In an interview with OTTplay, the filmmaker, who made his debut with Suraj Venjaramoodu and Soubin Shahir's Vikruthi, discussed his intriguing project that was planned before Meesha and the reason for the gap between his first and second films.
'Enittu Avasanam was supposed to be second film'
The director disclosed that Enittu Avasanam, which was intended to be his second directorial, was put on hold during the second wave of COVID-19. "We had finished pre-production and were ready to start shooting. This movie, which is centred on two women who break out of prison, required a lot of efforts and investment," he remarked. Emcy continued by saying that he began working on the Meesha script when it was postponed. "This women-centric film should have happened before Meesha but I will surely work on it soon hopefully," he stated.
He stated that a newspaper article that drew his attention a long time ago served as the inspiration for Enittu Avasanam's narrative. It was an article on the Indian women who were the first to break out of jail. I was intrigued, so I began going to jails and speaking with authorities and inmates to develop on this script," he added.
'Meesha explores friendship in an intense manner'
According to Emcy, people often celebrate friendship by highlighting all of its positive aspects, but he wanted to use Meesha to reveal its grey side. "I think that over time, friendship's definition has evolved. In this virtual world, this relationship has become more diluted. However, when we examine true friendship, we find that there are a variety of vulnerabilities, including ego, obligations, and possessiveness. This is shown in an intense manner in Meesha," he stated.
The renowned writer and filmmaker stressed that a person's ego is influenced by their social conditioning and is as complicated as any emotion. According to him, gender-based ego is primarily the result of our societal system, and the idea of masculinity is something we have heard or been taught over the years, which apparently requires one to be emotionally strong and not susceptible. Emcy went on to say that he drew inspiration for all of his characters from the people he met and witnessed throughout his life.
