Filmmaker Raaj Shaandilyaa, known for his successful ventures like Dream Girl franchsie, recently sat down with OTTplay to discuss his highly anticipated upcoming film, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video. Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri star in the 1990s-set film, set for release on October 11, 2024.

Blending nostalgia with mystery: Raaj Shaandilyaa's vision for the 90s era

In the interview, Shaandilyaa shared his unique approach to blending nostalgia with suspense. On being asked how people recall the 90s for their simplicity and charm, he added a suspenseful element. So how did the filmmaker decide to combine nostalgia with mystery, such as the missing CD? He responded, "That's the only reason, and we are making a sequel to the film. So, that's why we decided that let's do the 90s era this time and after 5-10 years, what we will do about today’s time will actually come later.”

Addressing the possibility of making more films in the franchise, he said, "Just after this, I will do a movie, then Dream Girl 3, then the sequel to the film. I have decided to do three things now; let's do it!”

Film's premise: Privacy invasion and the theft of a CD

The film's premise revolves around the invasion of a couple's privacy following the theft of a CD from their "first night" of marriage. When asked about his decision to set a comedy film in the 1990s around such a serious issue, Shaandilyaa remarked, “I made this film just for a message. In today's time, if anything of yours goes viral, you get stuck badly. In the 90s, everybody knows you; you come from a middle-class family, and a video of your 'first night' (of marriage) gets stolen. Emotion, first of all, especially for the girl; the guy can handle it, but for the girl, it's more impactful.”

He continued, “At that time, where you could present a message through comedy, today there are more than a lakh suicides happening because of blackmailing. It's a very serious topic, but through our film, we are serving it in a light way, saying something big with a smile. Once you watch the film, you will know that it's a serious comedy.”

Comedy as a tool for addressing significant issues

Shaandilyaa emphasised the power of comedy in addressing significant issues, stating, “With comedy, you can address anything, and those who understand will realise how important this matter is.”

As the release date approaches, audiences are eagerly awaiting how Shaandilyaa’s blend of humour and heartfelt message will unfold on the big screen.
