Sarvam Maya star Aju Varghese: 'Comparing us with Mohanlal & Sreenivasan is somewhat wrong' | Exclusive

After 15 years in the industry, Aju Varghese's filmography is studded with superhits, the most recent of which is Sarvam Maya. However, as usual, he gives full credit to the filmmakers and coworkers for allowing him to further nurture his acting potential. The actor discussed his upcoming projects in 2026 and how committed he is to acting in an interview with OTTplay.

Sarvam Maya has to be commended for reviving the classic Nivin Pauly-Aju Varghese combo. After the 2019 movie Love Action Drama, were you looking forward to such an opportunity?

Because those writers and directors have been able to make effective use of us, our chemistry generally works out well. They deserve the most credit, in my opinion, for the popularity of my and Nivin's combo in films. After Love Action Drama, I was undoubtedly anticipating this ideal chance, but I was even more excited to see the iconic Nivin Pauly performance in Sarvam Maya. I was looking forward to this Akhil Sathyan film because I missed him playing such roles.

People are comparing your and Nivin Pauly's performance in Sarvam to the classic Mohanlal-Sreenivasan movies that are still loved. What are your thoughts on these kinds of compliments?

Since they are legendary and we haven't even given half of their contributions to the Malayalam film industry, it is actually improper to make such compliments. Comparing us to others whose capabilities are unparalleled is unjust. However, I believe that these remarks are an audience's way of accepting and embracing us. I am undoubtedly pleased and grateful, but I try not to let such glowing reviews enter into my head.

You have worked in the industry for over fifteen years. How has your perspective on cinema evolved over time?

I don't think I had a clear plan for all these years, but I think my main goal was to work with filmmakers who could help me explore the performer in me. The Malayalam industry, in my opinion, provides the actors with the most support from directors and writers. I still think I have a lot to learn, and when I see several older actors perform, I still have fanboy moments. For now, acting is my only focus. I left production because I want to get better and better at acting.

What are your upcoming films in 2026?

My upcoming Malayalam films include Nikhila Vimal-starrer Pennu Case and Neeraj Madhav's Pluto. I have Prabhudeva's Moonwalk set for release in May and I am also playing a small part in Vaazha 2 and Nivin Pauly's Dear Students. I have two Tamil films as well Tattoo in which I play a detective and Suriya's Karuppu. That is an exciting project of mine because of course I am acting with Suriya and another reason is my combination scenes with one of my favourite actors in Malayalam, Indrans. I am also excited about Arun Chandu's Vala and Aadu 3.

Which recent Malayalam films would you recommend to a movie buff?

Now that is a difficult question! Speaking about the recent ones, I would suggest one must surely watch Thudarum, Lokah, Eko, Kalamkaval, Kishkindha Kaandam, Falimy and Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey. Bramayugam and Dies Irae are also good choices.
