Shivaji Interview: Dhandoraa will speak harsh truths, not every actor gets a comeback like this

Dhandoraa is an upcoming Telugu social drama that has grabbed attention with its teaser. The film is all set to hit the screens on December 25, 2025. Versatile actor Shivaji plays a key role in the film and speaks to us about his role, the theme of Dhandoraa, and his comeback in Telugu cinema. Here is the transcript.

Shivaji opens up about his latest release Dhandoraa

About your comeback with Court: State vs A Nobody?

Not every actor gets such a chance to make a comeback like that. I am extremely lucky to play Mangapathi in the film, and I thank Nani for okaying the courtroom drama. I expected my character to stand out, but I never imagined it would create such an impact. I have been flooded with offers after the success of the film.

Can we say you have finally arrived?

It has been 30 years in the industry, and I feel times have finally changed, as roles are now being written for actors like me. The change has come because actors who once played main leads are now willing to do character roles. When popular actors are open to such parts, young directors stop looking at actors from other states and start writing roles for us. I am happy that times are changing and more Telugu actors are being offered substantial roles.

What made you say yes to Dhandoraa?

I heard Dhandoraa’s script even before I was offered Court. Sadly, the film never took off earlier due to financial reasons. The moment I heard the script, I knew my character would stand out. The film has several key characters, but the story returns to my character for a crucial shift in the narrative. Such roles do not come easily, which is why I said yes to Dhandoraa right away.

I play a farmer, and my character has a satirical edge. One cannot gauge whether he is a villain or a hero. Such is his importance in the film. I feel the audience will be confused about my character while watching the film. The reason behind my behavior and the backstory will be revealed only on the big screen.

Dhandoraa sounds more like an art film. What do you have to say?

Dhandoraa is based on real-life incidents that happened in 2025. The director created a few fictional characters and interlaced a love story around them. The film deals with caste issues, romance, and honor killing, and each character has a proper backstory. Though the title sounds artsy, the narrative is quite contemporary, told thrillingly, and never gets preachy.

You are playing comedy as well as negative roles. What interests you the most?

I am an actor and am capable of doing all kinds of roles. I am proud that special characters are being written for me, and young directors are coming forward with exciting roles. In the days to come, I will be seen in both fun roles and negative characters, and I feel I am in the best phase of my career.

Dhandoraa is a social drama that speaks harsh truths and aims to be an eye-opener. Though it is releasing alongside five other films, it will stand out. Actors like Navdeep, Nandu, and Ravi Krishna have solid roles and will impress audiences.

Future projects?

I will next be seen in Epic, directed by #90s fame Aditya Haasan. I play a key role in Akhil Akkineni’s Lenin. I also have a film with Bhoomika and another project with Laya. There are several films in the pipeline, and I am happy to be approached for multiple projects.
