Tanya Hope, who made her acting debut with the 2016 film Appatlo Okadundevadu, is looking forward to completing a decade in the industry, as the actor has given some notable hits in the form of Tamil films like Dharala Prabhu and Thadam.

The actor, who feels so much has changed in the time in between, says, “I am not sure if it is to entirely with the industry, but as a woman, we have to learn so many things, including where to draw the boundaries, and learning to say no. How to prioritise oneself, and learn the practise of acceptance of it’s okay to say no.”

Tanya Hope Interview: I am very picky now

As she recollects the time when she started to work, Tanya says how she has a strict work ethic. “If they say 6 am to 8 pm, I will be there no matter what, and I still make sure I do that. But there are other things that go into making a film, say there is an action sequence and safety gears are not in place, I would be okay with that and proceed. I did not have any boundaries and neglected myself. Back then, I was so much in survival mode and took everything. But I am no longer that, and more relaxed. I am aware of what I bring to the table and am very picky now, be with work, or with whom I hang out with, whom I let romantically into my life,” Tanya says.

The young actor feels that it is important that even if she is doing a draining sequence for a film, she has to feel it is worthy and adds how what she feels is her priority over her previous reckless way of thinking. “It was fear-based then, and now passion-based.

Tanya, who admits to being a quiet person and finds it hard to express herself, says it is difficult to put herself out. And that is when films are a form of way for her to express herself. “When I am on the sets and asked to shout, scream and cry, it is like a release for me. It is coming out from my real life as well, and feels very therapeutic to me, which is why I don’t see myself doing anything else apart from acting.”

‘My goal is to do work with good teams’

Her next film Vallan, which released on Friday, is a thriller which is very much a forte that Tanya has worked in. “For the cop role in Ranam Aram Thavarel, I had to bring out my masculine side. She is a no-nonsense person and has set her boundaries. Sometimes you learn from your characters. With Vallan, my part is light-hearted and a breath of fresh air, which is also something that I can relate to. I really enjoy doing both,” she adds.

When asked about what 2025 looks like for Tanya, the actor says, “Since 2016, I have been just winging it. I never came in with a plan or strategy. But now, I don’t know what has switched inside me. I am going to streamline my projects this year, and have a vision and goals set in my mind. I want to do films in all languages and with good teams.”
