The Girlfriend out on OTT: Stream Rashmika Mandanna’s brave story of toxic love and self-discovery now

The Girlfriend would be a film that would spark a conversation – that’s what the cast and crew, led by director Rahul Ravindran and actors Rashmika Mandanna and Dheekshith Shetty maintained prior to its release. And spark it did. For a majority of the female audience, The Girlfriend had moments of de ja v; they could all relate to the protagonist, Bhooma Devi to some extent.

The men remained divided, but by and large, Rahul’s sensitive portrayal of the subject appealed to most audiences. The film, which hit theatres on November 7 had been picked up by Netflix and the film dropped on the platform at midnight on December 5, in Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi.

For Rashmika, whose acting chops have often come under the scanner, especially in her big-ticket Hindi films, The Girlfriend was validation that she’s not just the mandatory glam factor. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Rashmika said that until The Girlfriend, she had something to prove.

“I came here to be an actor but when they used to say that ‘she is being part of big spectacle films and does not have much to contribute’, it used to bother me. But somehow playing Bhooma Devi in The Girlfriend, gave me some peace in my heart and mind that I can be purely an actor, and not just be a heroine. That calmed my heart. I now want to do quality work over quantity,” she said.

The Girlfriend also starred Anu Emmanuel, Rao Ramesh and Rohini and followed Rashmika's character, who, after years of being stifled in controlling relationships, both by her father and then boyfriend, finally breaks free.
