Ankur, directed by Shyam Benegal was released in 1974 which plays on human behaviour starring Anant Neg & Sadhu Meher.
The movie revolves around Laxmi a Dalit girl who is married to Kishtayya who is a deaf-mute alcoholic potter. Meanwhile Surya, the son of the village landlord comes back home after completion of his studies. He is forced into marrying a child named Saru and is sexually frustrated. Laxmi and Kishtayya are sent to Surya as servants and Laxmi quickly catches his eyes.
Kishtayya is caught stealing toddy and is publicly humiliated. He ends up leaving the village embarrassed. Laxmi and Surya end up sleeping together and Laxmi gets pregnant. Once Kshitayya comes back he is now sober. Surya believes that Kishtayya was planning revenge and gets him whipped but Laxmi saves him and the two go home leaving Surya alone
