Girls in Afghanistan are not wed in coffins. So why did we use coffins? Filmmaking is an art built on cinematic liberty. The coffin is merely a cinematic symbol of a girl’s early death. This decision was inspired by the statement of a former child bride who said she never saw a day of happiness after marriage. Most never do. Life expectancy can be measured in different forms and the life of a child bride ends on her wedding day. This decision also helped us present a very brutal issue in a very elegant way—without any explicit scenes and in a way that helped protect our cast of women.
