During the height of British imperialism in India, a doctor named Govardhan is wrongfully accused of engaging in terroristic activities against the colonial government. His unfair trial sends him to the cellular jail referred to as Kala Pani in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. During his period of incarceration, Govardhan witnesses Indian prisoners and activists in the jail live in inhuman conditions and suffer abysmal treatment from the British authorities. Kaalapani is a Malayalam-language historical drama written by T. Damodaran and Priyadarshan, and directed by Priyadarshan. The film features Mohanlal, Prabhu, Sreenivasan, Vineeth, Tinnu Anand, Cochin Hanifa, Annu Kapoor, Tabu, Nedumudi Venu, and Amrish Puri among others.
