Kai Po Che!, is a 2013 movie, directed by Abhishek Kapoor, a drama based movie involving sports and politics. The film is gleaned from a novel, ”The three mistakes of my life” by Chetan Bhagat. Flashback takes us to the year 2000 when Ishaan, played by the late Sushant Singh Rajput, sets up a cricket shop with his two friends. He trains some children to play cricket and analyzes a kid named Ali Hashmi. He finds him to be a rare talent and trains him to be the best. Rajkummar Rao as Govind is ambitious enough to dream about the same shop in a mall. The three friends lend money from Omi’s uncle, a politician, to set up their shop. Nature’s element devastated many families on 26 January 2001, when an earthquake hit Gujarat, also demolishing the mall, with so many dreams. Towards the end of the movie, while communal riots take place, Omi played by Amit Sadh, becomes a part of this and goes against Muslims. The death of Omi’s parents and his uncle led him to go rogue and kill the Muslims. He attempts to kill Ali but Ishaan promises to protect him and takes the bullet in his chest. Ishaan dies instantly at the spot.

How deft storytelling and technique can overcome a simplistic story

Times of India

Despite the disturbing backdrop of death, destruction and politics, Kai Po Che is very likeable. Between tears, you find yourself smiling, because it's the story of friendship and human triumph above all else.

Firstpost

It is refreshing to see a friendship between three young men on celluloid, without a woman stepping into the equation to cause an imbalance in the predictable film format.

India Today

Kai Po Che uses its runtime well, regaling with a simple story of dreams even as it touches the complexity of modern India's most shameful socio-political chapter.
