The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a 2003 English - language film directed by Peter Jackson. It is an epic fantasy adventure film which stars Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin and Cate Blanchett. This film is the third installment in the Lord of the Rings series of films. The film depicts the final showdown between the good and evil forces fighting to get the control of the future of Middle-earth. Frodo and Sam reach Mordor in their quest in order to destroy that One Ring. Meanwhile Aragorn's good army fights against Sauron's evil army at the stone city of Minas Tirith.
