On September 30, 2022, Rishab Shetty released his film Kantara in theatres. Described as a rooted ‘mannina kathe’, the film came to cinema halls in Kannada only, but then, magic happened and almost overnight, Kantara became a sensation that everyone just had to see. Such was the craze for the film that the team had to scramble and bring out dubbed versions in the next few weeks, going on to rake in over Rs 400 crore at the box office. What really caught the fancy of movie-goers was the mythological element in the story involving Daivas Panjurli and Guliga, protecting the people of the forest, which was immensely elevated by Ajaneesh Lokanath’s music. In fact, in the final moments of the film, when Rishab is seen as the daiva narthaka and performs the kola, the Varaha Roopam song gave the sequence a very spiritual feel.

And now, on the occasion of the film’s first anniversary, production house Hombale Films is looking at releasing the full video of the song online. “From echoing through stadiums to weaving into our festive traditions and becoming the cherished soundtrack of our morning rituals and wake up call, this song has left an indelible mark on our lives. Let's come together to relive the magic and rediscover the enchantment as we unveil the highly anticipated 'Varaha Roopam' from #Kantara on Sep 30,” read the official post.

However, after the film’s release, the popular number was embroiled in a long legal tussle with Malayalam band Thaikkudam Bridge over a copyright claim, with the latter stating that Ajaneesh had lifted their track Navarasa for Varaha Roopam. The similarities between the two tracks are undeniable and while Ajaneesh denied copying Navarasa, he admitted to being inspired by it. In fact, for a while, the OTT version of the film did not feature the Varaha Roopam song, which was replaced with another version.
