From Student of the Year(SOTY) to Brahmastra, Alia Bhatt’s decade long career in Bollywood has seen the actress grace the silver screen with a range of stellar performances. But it seems that her debut in Karan Johar’s SOTY was something that took both Alia and her family by surprise. As the 2012 film, which launched Alia’s career, completed 10 years on Wednesday the actress’ mother, Soni Razdan took to Instagram to celebrate the same.

Sharing a video of the film, which also featured Karan, Soni mentioned in the caption that the opportunity for Alia to act in the film had come out of nowhere, when they least expected it. Soni spoke of how Alia had been busy working on her diploma at the time and acting in a film was still a distant dream for her, one that she was not prepared for at the time. The plan was for Alia to attend drama school first and then try for a film role. Soni also thanked Karan for casting and mentoring Alia.

Karan commented on the post with “Soni!!!! So much love to Bhatsaab and you for trusting me”.

The director had also penned a heartfelt note when the film turned ten years old. He spoke of how the film helped him find ‘family’ in Alia, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. Karan went on to reveal that he still talked to the three every day and they were the first people that ignited a kind of ‘protective parental feeling’ in him.

In addition to Alia, the film also marked the silver screen debuts of Varun and Sidharth as well. Sidharth also took to Instagram to celebrate completing a decade of his journey in Bollywood on Wednesday.

Student of the Year can be streamed on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
